Camrose Tower Residents Group – Setting up a Community Garden

The group, based in Birmingham, wanted to bring back into use their community garden which is

overgrown and has been neglected. They then wanted to use the garden for over 50’s to enjoy and

enable them to do some gardening in more accessible raised beds.

Some members of the group attended our Setting up a Community Garden course and were awarded

a grant of £300. The grant was to enable the group to purchase tools so that they could clear the over

grown garden and then keep it in a better condition going forwards. They also wanted to use the

money to build raised beds which would be more accessible for older gardeners and for those with

disabilities.

Once the garden was up and running again the group plan to sell plants that they have grown to raise

some funds.

“We have managed to clear some of the garden ourselves now we have the tolls. Some local people

have offered plants and cuttings when we have the ground ready. We have planted some strawberry

plants and fruit bushes that were donated to us”.

Eveline Hargadon, Camrose Tower Residents

Gardening Group

The group did have some difficulties when it came to ordering the tools, this set their project back to

later in the year which then made it harder to clear the ground as the weather wasn’t as nice. The

raised beds were also seasonal so they will have to wait until 2015 to get them in place.

Looking to the future the group plan to get the rest of the garden cleared, create a sensory garden, a

rockery and varnish the benches to there is a place to sit.

The project is going to take longer they had originally expected but the group are determined to get

it finished.
